I've been doing martial arts for the past 2 years at HSMA. I started in March of 2006 with no martial arts background. I train there in kickboxing, boxing, judo and jiu jitsu. More recently I've started training Muay Thai at the Phoenix Fight Club under Kru Adam Higson. My martial arts career started as a way to get into better shape and change my life around from where it was potentially headed. I was always a natural athlete who loved the idea of combative sports, but never knew the route to take to get into that type of thing, until one day I called Mickey Dimic. I started training with the idea that I wanted to compete and after one month of training, won my first grappling tournament. From there I figured this was something that I'd like to pursue, and with the help of many of my coaches and instructors, I've developed into a pretty well rounded fighter. I set my goals extremly high at the start of my training and keep those goals in near sight. I'd love to one day fight professionally, either in the UFC, or more recently I've set K-1 as a future goal of mine. Both of these to me, are the pinnacle of their respective disiplines, those being MMA and striking/ kickboxing. It's important for me to achieve the goals that I set for myself and through hardwork and discipline, I hope to one day acheive these goals.

Grimsby’s Adam Hensen bounces back into the ring for his second amateur Muay Thai fight. Hensen competed at the Arnold Classic in Columbus Ohio this past weekend, capturing his first win by defeating his opponent Matt Reckers by unanimous decision.
“I thought I did extremely well. I was calm and relaxed. All my strikes had intent on them, and I feel like I totally outclassed my opponent” says Hensen.
Hensen, has only been training in Muay Thai for four months under Adam Higson, in Hamilton, Ontario. He is well known in Muay Thai for his various championships and titles.
For this fight Hensen had to drop 17 pounds. Naturally, he walks around at 185 pounds but in Muay Thai the cut off weight for his weight division is 168 pounds. This was the first time Hensen had to cut this amount of weight. He says that he didn’t do it all at once and dropped the weight over a three to four week period.
“It wasn’t too hard at first, but the last two to three days are hard. It weighed on me mentally, so I had to be strong in that sense” says Hensen.
This wasn’t the first time Hensen fought outside of his country and says that it is extremely important for him to let people know he is a Canadian Fighter.
“I’m Canadian born and bred. If I have the chance to represent not just myself and my gym, but my country on an international scale, it’s the ultimate privilege” says Hensen who also adds that we are all products of our environment, and he says Canada had produced some world class fighters.
Hensen isn’t new to the fighting scene. He captured a gold medal in an international MMA competition hosted in England in September 2007, he has also competed in and has been very successful in various submission grappling competitions.
He explains that his family and friends are his biggest supporters and says his fiancee is his biggest fan. “At first they couldn’t really grasp why I would put my body through such torture, or my well-being on the line, but as they saw the results on many levels they were satisfied” says Hensen.
Adam Hensen is a very humbled fighter who never hesitates to learn from any experience he is put in. He says in the last two years part of his success comes from the people he surrounds himself with. “If you surround yourself with good people, good things usually follow” says Hensen. |
